Every move was painfully slow.

Each step seemed to drag his body forward.

He lumbered from one task to another.

 A young man.

In life’s prime.

At the beginning of his purpose.

Detached, uninterested, tired, checking the box.

His eyes never met others.

He took what was offered, processed, handed it back.

I waited.

In a line.

Ever lengthening.

10 minutes.

20 minutes.

People came and added to the line.

He lumbered.

Each trip from the copier to the register seemed to take longer.

Place the memory stick in the computer.  Pull up the file.  Check the settings.

Silence.

Everything in slow motion.

I left the line.

Feeling free.

Happily found other purchases.

Checking out.

“The man working in copy needs help.”

Silence.

Vacant eyes.

“Really, I’m not complaining.”

Silence.

“Can you tell the manager?”

“The man working in copy needs help.”

Consider:

  • Did the check out clerk tell her manager?
  • Did the manager provide any feedback or development to the man working in copy?
  • Has the manager ever observed this employee?
  • Has the manager ever worked on weekends and after hours to observe the operation?
  • Was this a small or large business?  Does it matter?
  • Who can help this man working in copy?
