When I saw this cute video it dawned on me that this concept is exactly what we want to encourage training classes.
First- Facilitators need everyone to work together-and no one to be left out.
Second – Facilitators must squelch the training bullies in the class.
So how do we accomplish this?
Getting everyone to work together:
- Set up situations in which participants choose someone to work with whom they have not met before.
- Have a “cocktail party” activity (no booze) in which people have to rotate among the crowd to get information, a question answered or other activity that is focused on class content.
- Assign a “host” for different sections of the class. The “host” is responsible for connecting people who have not met and/or assigning participants to groups so that different people work together.
- Put everyone’s names in a “hat” and have each person draw a name. They have a particular assignment to do involving that person during the day. Example: They get together and share their insights for the day. They ask each other specific questions around content. They act as coaches or mentors during the day.
Squelching training bullies:
- Communicate ground rules in advance: Keep comments concise, allow everyone to have a chance, facilitator reserves the right to interrupt and move on if someone is too lengthy.
- Assign bullies tasks that will keep them busy during the session, such as writing on the easel, passing out papers, etc.
- Ask the bully a question first, then, ask other people. Sometimes giving the bully attention first satisfies his/her need for attention.
- Take a break if the bully is mistreating others in any way. Talk to the bully privately during the break and set ground rules.
- Remove the bully from class if necessary for the good of the class. (Last resort!)
